3.0 CASE OF APPLICATION-CPP's INSTALLED IN A SYDNEY'S

MANLY FERRY "COLLAROY"

3.1 Outline of the Project

"COLLAROY" is a public ferry boat popularly known as "MANLY FERRY" running between Circular Quay and Manly crossing the Sydney Bay. The ferry is operated by the State Transit Authority of New South Wales of Australia. "COLLAROY" is capable of carrying 1,100 passengers as regular liner for commuters and tourists. She is also used as ocean cruiser in tourist season as she obtained an ocean.going qualification.
The ferry is of double-ended hull having symmetrical bow and stern fitted with two CPP's, one at bow and the other at stern.
Two units of medium speed engine of 2,600 Ps each are installed as main engine to provide adequate power margin to maintain ferry's punctual operation and ocean cruising.

Kamome Propeller have contracted with the State Transit Authority of New South Wales of Australia to deliver two units of CPP and one unit of computerized Integrated Control Systems of Propulsion and Maneuvering, known as 'MACS' System. The integrated control system does provide the load sharing function of the following equipment by finding the optimum combinations to cope with each and every operating mode of the vessel, and they are;

・ Two units of CPP
・ Two units of main engine
・ Four units of compound type reduction gear box
・ Two units of shaft brake

Under the operating mode which includes two functional modes, namely sailing and maneuvering mode, each equipment is brought to a complete control through an optimum load sharing program.
The operating modes are supported by more than 60 computer programs to effect the optimum combinations, but under the actual operation once the captain (or operator) selects one specific mode, then the optimum equipment configuration can automatically be selected and combined, so that he can easily control the vessel just by tipping a Joystick.
Under the maneuvering mode the captain (or operator) can control either of CPP and rudder at bow or stern by tipping the Joystick for such complicated vessel maneuvering at the time of berthing and unberthing plus sideways movement.
In addition, feathering type CPP's were introduced as the vessel is of double-ended configuration. Whilst either of CPP (bow and stern) is ordinarily used under the sailing mode for propulsion, the other CPP is automatically set for feathering to reduced the drag of the propellers by bringing the propeller pitch in parallel to the water flow.
